Optherion has a worldwide intellectual property estate licensed from a dozen universities providing an exclusive basis for genetic and protein biomarker diagnostics and therapeutics for AMD, and other diseases of the alternative complement cascade.

In 2010, Optherion licensed exclusive worldwide rights to Sequenom, Inc. for the development and commercialization of diagnostic tests to predict genetic predisposition to late stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The license agreement covers extensive intellectual property rights for the most significant AMD-related genetic variants that have been confirmed in multiple clinical studies around the world. The portfolio of intellectual property has been consolidated from major US universities who have spearheaded genetic and clinical AMD research during the last decade.
